Sandringham House Carriage Driving event, ran its inaugural event in 1982 alongside a country fair. The date of the event always followed the week after Royal Ascot. This date was also either before or after the Royal Norfolk Show.
A large level Main Arena was constructed at great cost, which was used for the Driven Dressage phase and ring attractions, such as the Kings Troop and falconry displays. Quality trade stands were situated around this arena, giving extra interest for spectators, to watch the attractions and the Carriage Driving, and to go ‘shopping’!
Our current set up has a large marquee, overlooking The Main Arena, for Sponsors and Special Guests to enjoy the activities away from the elements.
Since 2004, the Country Fair has been held in August, which has unfortunately seen its split from the carriage driving event. The Carriage Driving Event now runs on its own, using monies from sponsorship given by kind enthusiasts which has allowed the event to continue. We are always looking for sponsorship if you would like to discuss please contact Jean Lane
Because of the vast acreage of the Sandringham Estate, the marathon course is able to use a different route each year. This gives competitors the opportunity to drive through the gardens of and past the majestic Sandringham House. The course can run through both the Old and the New Norwich Gates, finishing section A drive and have their 10 minute rest near the Museum Garages of Sandringham House. The drive is around roads and tracks, through the beautiful Lavender fields and many woods, fields of fruit trees and past The Kings’ Royal Stud. There is no end to the choice of the many different routes available on the Sandringham Estate so our competitors can enjoy a different view every year.
In 2017 the organising committee decided to integrate other driving disciplines in the events and invited the ‘Coaching Club’ to participate, meeting in the main area before enjoying a drive through the Sandringham House Gardens, past the Royal Stud, and around the larger Estate before meeting in front of the Lake for their presentation. We have also had the AIAT Attelage d'Tradition to use the venue over the same weekend to compete over 2 day. The first day they were based in the main arena, with the second day they too enjoy a scenic drive through the estate before competing in a cones competition in the arena in front of the Lake.
Sandringham 2024 builds on the heritage of the connection the Estate has to carriage driving. Welcoming Horse Driving Trials, Coaching Club, AIAT Attelage d'Tradition and Scurry Driving across an action packed 3 days.
The event will be open to competitors from Tuesday and to the public from Friday.
