Sandringham Horse Driving Trials is thrilled to announce an exciting new chapter in its history. For 2025, the event has undergone a name change to reflect the diverse range of carriage driving disciplines that will be showcased. The newly named The Sandringham Festival of Carriage Driving will provide an even bigger and more inclusive celebration of the sport, bringing together a spectacular variety of classes and competitors.
"We wanted a name that truly represents the scale and scope of what we are offering," said Robin Hyde Chambers, a key driving force behind the event. "Our vision for 2025 is simple: if it has wheels and goes behind an equine, we want it at Sandringham."
Hosted in the prestigious Sandringham Estate, the 2025 festival promises to be even more impressive than its predecessors, expanding to include British Driving Society classes, Hackney Horse Society driving classes, British Scurry & Trials Driving, and Horse Boarding alongside the much-loved National and Club Horse Driving Trials, Coaching Club, and Attelage d’Tradition. This unique combination makes Sandringham the only event in the UK to unite such a wide array of carriage driving disciplines in one spectacular showcase.
"This is just the beginning," Robin continued. "We are incredibly excited to bring so many different styles of carriage driving to the public and fellow enthusiasts. Our hope is that this marks the start of a truly remarkable festival, setting the stage for an even greater event in 2026 with more disciplines and competitors joining us at the prestigious Sandringham Estate."
The Sandringham Festival of Carriage Driving is set to be a must-attend event for competitors, spectators, and anyone with a passion for the beauty and skill of carriage driving.
Sandringham Horse Driving Trials is delighted to announce that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh has graciously accepted our invitation to become our President.
Sandringham Horse Driving Trials have a long-standing relationship with the Royal Family, having been founded and presided over from its inception until his passing by the late HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We are deeply appreciative that The Duchess has taken on the legacy left by Prince Philip and are grateful for the support she has already provided to us.
The Duchess's acceptance marks a continuation of the Royal Family's esteemed association with Sandringham Horse Driving Trials, and we are looking forward to a long relationship with Her Royal Highness.
Our inaugural event all the way back in 1982 was the vision by the late HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh to bring one of his favourite sports to one of his favourite places.
We have run either a national or international carriage driving event over the weekend after Royal Ascot ever since.
We are privileged to have hosted the World Carriage Driving Championships twice, the very first FEI Championships for Horse Pairs in 1984 and the FEI Para-Equestrian Driving Championships in 2014, as well as the FEI European Championships for Four in Hand Ponies in 2002, in which HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh was part of the Great British Team.
In 2022 we also hosted the National Single Horse Championships.
In 2024 a new committee took over and welcomed over 130 competitors across Horse Driving Trials (National, Club, Gateway and VSE classes), the Coaching Club, CIAT Attelage d'Tradition and Scurry Driving over 3 action packed days.
For 2025 we are planning an even bigger event with more carriage driving disciplines including the National Championships of Advanced Horse Pairs and the introduction of driven showing classes appearing over the three days, for the newly rebranded The Sandringham Festival of Carriage Driving.
